About

About

My name is Jessica Stratton and I've had that last name since March 10th, 2018. I was sealed to my husband Cade in the Cedar City Temple and have enjoyed married life. At 21 years old, I didn't think I would have made it back to southern Utah quite yet, but I met my husband in May 2017 and since then my plans changed.
I grew up in Parowan and love that small town with all my heart. SUU would have been an easy first choice, being only 20 minutes from my house, but agriculture is a passion for me and I wanted to go to the agriculture university USU. I spent 5 semesters, 2 1/2 years, in Logan to further my education. I came home in the summer to save money for school. While attending USU I was able to receive my associates degree in Agriculture Science. I was also able to become a True Aggie with my husband in October (a huge accomplishment for me). He proposed later that day.
I planned on getting my degree from USU, but since I was getting married and Cade lived here in Cedar, I transferred to SUU. 300 miles is a little hard to deal with. I was a little worried about SUU and what to expect, but I love it and feel at home. I'll always be an Aggie, but that doesn't mean I can't be a T-bird too.
I am expecting to graduate next spring and want to become an agriculture teacher and FFA adviser. I want to teach what I am so passionate about, what I have lived my whole life immersed in. I grew up raising pigs and sheep on a 10 acre farm. I rode horses competitively in a variety of events. I've had small projects with honey bees, chickens, ducks, Australian shepherds and Healers, was heavily involved in FFA and am fascinated by plants, greenhouses, orchards, and gardens. There is so much to learn.
I'm happy to be home and married to a wonderful man. I'm happy to be going to SUU to further my education. I can't wait to see what opportunities are in the future.

Projects

Edge:
My edge project for SUU is focused on Agriculture in high school. I've seen kids struggling with progressing in agriculture for various reasons. Mostly because some programs are suffering in our schools. In the end I hope to give the kids more opportunity to learn in the agricultural field.
  • Gathering lesson material that is engaging
  • Discussing agriculture with local schools
  • Ask the students what they wish to learn and what projects they would like to conduct.
  • Discuss these with teachers, advisers, and other educators to show the importance of agriculture.

  • Raised show lambs and hogs to show at the Southwest Livestock Show (10 years)
  • Conducted breeding programs with Wether Sire, Hampshire, Suffolk, Rambouillet, and Columbia sheep. Selling the lambs to producers or as show lambs for 4-H and FFA kids.
